About the Artist
Berthon, George Theodore (1806 – 1892)
Berthon was born into an artistic family of Vienna; his father was court painter to Napoleon I. The family immigrated to England in 1827. In England he was tutor of French language and drawing to the daughters of UK Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Moved to Toronto in 1837 but made visits back to England where he met Paul Kane. Early in his career he painted landscapes and portraits and genre paintings. He became an exceedingly fashionable Toronto portrait painter, and in his later career, took to exclusively painting portraits from his private Younge Street studio.
