About the Artist
The Rocky Mountain wilderness inspires my bronze and clay sculptures. Personal encounters with wildlife evoke a deep passion, a desire to capture the magic of those moments. Hopefully the work will promote the importance of the environmental movement.
By building several originals simultaneously, I compare one against another. This process allows an investigation into how a rigid material can convey fluidity of motion. Often a swivel is mounted in the base to invite interaction, and interplay between perspective and light. The anticipation of movement draws the admirer in, recreating the thrill of an encounter with Canada’s breathtaking wildlife. Some pieces take several weeks, others many months to complete.
Creating art is a compelling process, a journey I find irresistible
-Tom Hjorleifson
Tom Hjorleifson has always been fascinated by wilderness and wildlife. His early recollections are of time spent observing wild places and the animals that live there. Canoeing, trekking, climbing and skiing became a means for the highlight of the adventure, wildlife viewing.
Everything changed after Tom gave his young children a box of clay for Christmas in 1990. A passion for wildlife became wildlife art. Self taught, working in his home studio, Tom joined the Canmore Artists and Artisans Guild in 1992. He has been creating and selling his sculpture since then. Tom’s original hand painted, fired clay sculpture on stone is found in collections from across the street to around the world.
In the autumn of 2006 Tom produced his first sculpture in Bronze. He has recently brought his eleventh limited edition bronze into production.
His current project, a large abstract sculpture in steel is a departure from his usual work.
Tom resides in Canmore with his wife and assistant Patricia. He continues to be inspired by the natural wonders this region offers.
