Michael Corner: Artifice
Exhibition and Sale 8 - 22 September 2023 Michael Corner’s paintings have for many years been reminiscent of the old masters. He crafts his works with carefully executed chiaroscuro, dignified subjects, and each painting is rife with symbolism. The self-taught artist takes his influences from art history and reforms them into his own brand of mysterious imagery.
In his latest body of work, Artifice, Corner has planted paintings directly from these old masters into his own created worlds. We are left to our own devices to study each detail of his figures in conversation with the likes of Manet or Bruegel. Each picture holds incredible details that can be missed upon first viewing: sometimes they are allegorical, and sometimes they are referential to the artist’s own narrative. They are narratives to be considered by the viewer, and then returned to over time to consider again. Read more -
