Richard Gorenko is interested in concepts of symbol imagery and iconography in pictorial language. His imagery may be characterized as schematic or diagrammatic – his approach is simple and direct. The world he pictures alludes to both the natural and built landscape in a variety of settings and contexts. The content of the images often oscillates between playful or humorous representations to somewhat more wistful or reflective considerations. Much of his work has been influenced by his prairie roots, though the ideas in his work are portable and have resonance with a wide audience. Gorenko is also interested in the rustic and/or elegant features embedded in common materials and seeks to underscore the inherent aesthetic qualities of the actual materials or he may counterfeit “the look” of other surfaces, formats, and traditions.

Richard Gorenko lives and works in Calgary. His work has been exhibited widely in Canada and the United States. His work is represented in many public, corporate, and private collections (The National Gallery of Canada, The Canada Council Art Bank, The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Claridge Collection, The Agnes Etherington Gallery, The Mendel Art Gallery… to name only a few).
