Artist Statement
Recently, a friend introduced me to the writings of Antonio Porchia. The humble and beloved Argentinian writer has captured me in his succinct words and I am particularly drawn to his quote, “Night is a world lit by itself.”
Last January, in the depths of winter, I visited Iceland for the first time. There was a quiet, vast, and deep darkness there that allowed for the breathing room I needed to paint and create. In that space of winter, I found myself immersed in the white light of days that cast briefly into much longer stretches of night. There were the stars, the wondrous play of Aurora Borealis, and bonfires lit during Yule. Iceland was truly a land of light and dark.
Much of Iceland was covered in stark, black lava-scapes – a contrast to the emerging springtime that met me on my return to Calgary. As memories of Iceland filled my mind, my garden at home burst into life. These contrasting landscapes emphasized a sense of emptiness and fullness.
Soon after my return to Canada I experienced a loss. This loss emphasized my shared human predicament, how lives become cast into shadow, and emptiness and darkness become overwhelming. This show depicts moments of time caught somewhere between the contrasts of emptiness and fullness, radiant light and abundance, dancing stars and quiet, silent nights. This exhibit depicts the dark, and the finding of a light – a ‘Stella Polaris’ or North Star, there to guide the voyage.

About The Artist

My gestural style - characteristic of German Expressionism - emphasizes the subjective expression of inner experiences. The truest picture of a moment - the figure of a place - occurs in a balanced abstraction of everyday perspectives. To convey this I combine line, form and colour to represent and yet slightly distort my subject matter. This creates a field of view that is both familiar and enigmatic.

Amy Dryer attended the Alberta College of Art and Design, the Glasgow School of Art (Scotland) and the Fine Art program at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 2008, she was on the cover of Avenue Magazine as ‘Calgary’s Best’ and more recently she has been featured as a ‘Profiled Artist’ in both Essential Magazine and Galleries West Magazine. She completed an artist residency at Emma Lake Saskatchewan in 2009 and at The Banff Centre, Alberta in 2013. Amy’s paintings are in a number of collections throughout Canada, and the US, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts public art collection. Amy is based in Calgary, AB.
