George Angliss was born in Penticton in 1921 and grew up in near Three Mile Beach. While growing up he worked in his father’s orchard and spent much time exploring the area’s hills and valleys. He would later paint these hills, in his own words, without ‘isms’, as a direct response to the structural and atmospheric beauty of the land. Between 1939 and 1945 he studied at the Vancouver School of Art and the Ontario College of Art. It was a very exciting period in the world of Canadian art and George studied under such artists as B.C. Binning, Jack Shadbolt, and Charles Comfort. It was probably during this time that he formed the philosophies on which he would rely for the development of his art and his life. To quote an article about his life taken from an Alberta Visual Arts Newsletter: “His home, his day to day activities and his art become ‘one’ in the search for cohesiveness and unity.”
His professional career spanned 46 years and included employment as a graphic artist, an architectural and theatre designer and builder, and art director and instructor at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. He served as a board member with a variety of organizations in Alberta and BC. As advisory board member with Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism, he was one of the capable resource people called upon in the early 1960’s to help guide and develop government programs of assistance to the visual art community of the province. George , together with Archie Key and Jean Mihalcheon, provided the stimulus and organizational needs to get the Muttart Gallery in the old Memorial Park Library. As an exhibiting artist, George was best known for his watercolours and multi-media sculptures and constructions.
