Joane Cardinal-Schubert: Works from the Estate

January 27 - February 10, 2022

January 27th – February 10th, 2022

Joane Cardinal-Schubert (1942 – 2009) was an artist, curator, and activist whose body of work addressed Indigenous experiences and struggle for cultural autonomy. Cardinal-Schubert drew upon autobiographical references, the history of Western Colonialism and art history in a career that spanned over four decades. She received many accolades, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2005, and in 2018, the opening of Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.

Masters Gallery represented Cardinal-Schubert’s work commercially for over 20 years. Works from the Estate represents a collection of works that span her career from the late 1970s to the early 2000s, and we are pleased to share it with you. We thank Joane’s husband Mike and son Justin for their contributions to this exhibition.
