The surfaces are covered with burlap sacks. All the Monas rely on the overall shapes within the compositions. The question I posed myself was, how many details can I leave out and still see Mona? And, what is the most important factor in recognizing Mona? The negative spaces? The overall shape of the figure? In this piece I wanted to create excitement with the use of bright colours, not only on the burlap, but also on the edges of the puzzle pieces.
