The work emerges from a period of profound uncertainty in Maggie’s life. In the lead-up to her father’s death, she was trying to keep up a sense of normalcy for her children and herself, facing the impending catastrophe. The woman appears performative, as if pretending to be composed while the house fire rages behind her. The fire becomes both literal and psychological, masked by the insistence that it’s probably fine.
