An exceptional example of Marc-Aurèle Fortin’s celebrated landscapes, Falling Leaves (1937) is now available for private sale from a distinguished private collection. The painting was previously handled by Galerie Valentin in Montreal, closely associated with the documentation and authentication of Fortin’s work. Its provenance also includes T. Eaton Co. Ltd., whose original label remains on the reverse, along with a handwritten certification attributed to Madame Lucienne Lange of Galerie L’Art français. Beautifully preserved, the painting offers an exceptional combination of subject, period, condition and provenance.
Fortin is among Canada’s most distinctive landscape painters, celebrated particularly for his monumental trees and expressive interpretations of the Quebec countryside. His paintings of the 1920s and 1930s transformed familiar rural subjects into extraordinary compositions through bold colour, rhythmic movement and an almost theatrical treatment of nature. Painted in 1937, Falling Leaves belongs to this celebrated period and explores one of the defining subjects of his career: the grandeur and vitality of trees. It is a compelling example of the vision that established Fortin as one of the most original figures in Canadian modern art.
