"Icons is a collection of Alberta mountain landscapes that have become deeply embedded within both our collective visual identity and my own artistic practice. These landscapes are not new subjects for me. Over the past twenty years, I have returned to many of these places repeatedly—some more than fifteen times. Yet each encounter continues to offer something new. Their scale, presence, and distinct character make them enduring sources of inspiration. These are landscapes that have become familiar, even iconic, yet their ability to evoke awe has never diminished. With this collection, I wanted to place these landscapes on a pedestal—to emphasize their grandeur, drama, and significance while reconsidering what it means to repeatedly paint a place we believe we already know. Each landscape in Icons has been painted en plein air through smaller studies and direct observation. This lived experience is an essential part of my process. Spending time physically within these environments allows the landscape to become more than an image or recognizable landmark; it becomes a sensory experience that informs the physicality, movement, and presence of the finished painting. The works are painted on both canvas and Belgian linen—traditional supports with a long history within the practice of painting. I am drawn to the juxtaposition of these materials with the inherently contemporary qualities of thick, expressive acrylic paint. The tension between traditional surfaces and modern, heavily worked paint creates a dialogue between history and immediacy, permanence and gesture.Through Icons, I am revisiting landscapes that have been painted countless times and asking what remains to be discovered. These familiar places continue to hold significance because they are not static. Each return offers a new light, a new atmosphere, a new experience—and another opportunity to translate the enduring power of the Alberta landscape through paint."— Samantha Williams-Chapelsky -
